There was a very interesting presentation on Saturday by kat_lair regarding the myths and celebrations around Halloween in Finland. After that presentation we got our spooky glad rags on and headed off to the comm dinner restaurant - The Anthologist in St Peter's Square. It was ridiculously noisy when we got in there (Saturday night people having their first drink before heading off to do whatever they were going to do). There was live music, which we couldn't hear initially. It was a good sized space though and people seemed to enjoy the food. Once the early evening crowd had moved on it quietened down and we were not only able to hear ourselves think, and converse, but we could also hear the music.

Sunday, the last morning of the event brought a discussion on AI. I'm not sure if I noted this all down correctly, so apologies if I've gotten some of it wrong.

Discussion: AI

Reached ranks of self-publishers. Writing gets you fame and fortune – publish it and drown out the market. “All romances going to be AI!” vibe.
Pictures as well – covers for books. All creative activities
A03 – how much are they inundated? Some people tag that their fic/fanart is AI generated. How do mods on A03 know what is AI? How do they manage this?
Publishers who used to use ghost writers now moving to books by AI – quantity over quality.
AI on everything – Gmail, Microsoft, online grammar sites.
Feeding the machine
Scraping the internet
Bolting the door after the horse has bolted.
One university has created an opensource programme that poisons your digital art so it can’t be scrapped.
Using someone’s work as the inspiration of your own is what we do as fanfic writers.
Academia – students do it as pressure to submit work too intense if they’re not full-time students.
ChatGPT
Passing of AI’s work as your own – is that immoral?
Knowledge base by stealing people’s content is immoral.
It’s the intention or the dishonesty that uses it.

How to Control it?

People need to be louder about it – there needs to be commentary.
Pro-active
AI – indie publishing routes
NANOWRIMO – AI allows disabled people to write – people opted out this year due to AI sponsor.
Big publishing houses do nothing to combat it.
OTW should be pushing back.
Solutions run technology behind the text.
AI – oxymoron – not intelligent

It’s not easy to report anything on AO3 – policy questions and abuse reports. AO3 needs a button like twitter and FB have.

We didn't just have discussions, there was also music, prompts for writing, and general chatting and enjoying ourselves. Even though we were a small bunch this year, we felt that we wanted to do it again next year. 3. Kinks, not tropes, but where do you draw the line – for example BDSM AU is a trope.

Our second discussion is very much a love of dreamersdare (and others in the room), so we asked her to lead it. We know that mafia gangs or street gangs are a particular favourite of hers, and they're also very good for musician RPF amongst others.

Discussion 1: Inspiration 13 + 1

Hello everyone

Apologies for taking so long to upload the notes from the discussions from this year's event. I spoke to kat_lair and we thought that it would be a good idea to post these separately. The longer discussion notes will be under cuts. Please to remember these were notes that I took at the time, they're not all verbatim and hopefully I haven't missed anything hugely important!

On Friday afternoon we had a discussion about what inspires us to create fanworks. We did intend it to be limited to 10, and then 10 became 11, 12, and finally 13. We thought we'd leave it at 13 because that was a good number, particularly as we were celebrating Halloween over the event weekend, but then, well then dreamersdare reminded us of the one thing we'd forgotten. And you know what, she was right! So we included that as well. So this list is 13 + 1.

Next Year's Fandom Event Dates - Stick it in your diaries

Hi everyone

This year's fandom event went very well. I'll be doing some more posts later in the week about what we got up to.

However, because it went so well (even though it was a small group), it was felt very much that we wanted to do another.

Suffice as to say - it's going to be the weekend of 24 - 26 October 2025, and will be in Doncaster. Stick it in your diaries.

We thought that we would look at somewhere that is easily accessible for people by both road and public transport, and would also be cheaper than Manchester. Manchester was lovely, but those staying at the hotel did spend quite a bit, and it's not as if we went out other than to eat, so somewhere cheaper was felt to be better. Not that Doncaster is cheap, for any of you that live there, but it's cheaper than Manchester.

So could you please let us know know in the comments below whether you'd be interested in coming or not.

I've tried to include polls in this entry but DW doesn't want to play, so comments it is I'm afraid :)

Amended Programme and Friday Dinner

Hello you lovely people.

kat_lair and I had a chat earlier in the week and we've come up with an amended programme (well Kat pretty much did it). I have also booked the Anthologist for Friday night - hope this is okay. I have booked this for 6.00pm and have made them aware that one of our guests is in an electric wheelchair.

I'm not going to even discuss the issues with the rooms when I tried to change what card I was going to pay on. Trust me it was a bloody nightmare, consequence of which we don't know which room we're in now, or whether we have TV, DVD player etc. But it's paid and I have confirmation. It ended costing just over £55.00 per person so no worries about that. Kat and I will be heading over there Friday morning to sort things out, and also to check in as we're staying Friday and Saturday night. Well Kat will be sorting things out cos the whole room thing has been stressing me out LOTS!!

But it's gonna be a good one :)

It's getting closer - suggestions for restaurants/events etc

Hello everybody

So we've been looking at a few restaurants around the hotel for Friday night, and also some for Saturday night. Because it is the weekend before Halloween there are quite a few events going on in Manchester City Centre, including a Halloween Market in St Anns Square.

FRIDAY NIGHT

We were thinking of staying around the hotel. Now Canal Street is close by but most of the places on Canal Street are not accessible venues, which is a bit of a bugger to be honest.

One of the places that is close to the hotel, does good cocktails and is fully accessible is The Anthologist.

27 Days and Counting Until Fandom Weekend!

Hope you are still planning on joining us. If yes, a) please leave a comment in this post and b) see below for a reminder of some key practicalities, including the (loosey goosey) programme.

When: Fri 25th to Sun 27th October. For timings, see 'Programme' below.

Where: Manchester Central Premier Inn

How to get there: Once you have made it to the Manchester proper, the easiest way is to use the tram. St Peter's Square tram stop is the nearest (you can see the Premier Inn from the stop). See Bee Network website for local travel planning help.

What does it cost: We are only looking to cover the cost of the meeting room booking, which is £332.40. The total cost will thus depend on the number of people coming... The last count suggested 7 which would make it ~£47.50 pp.

When and how should I pay that: pushkin666 has made the booking and the money will be taken out of her account on Oct 11th. So please pm her for her account details and transfer the money prior to that.

Even with only 7 members confirmed, we are forging ahead (like a sparkly steam engine). There is of course plenty of room for more participants should you find yourself available 25-27 October 2024, so do come and join us.

However, programme and activities must still be planned (structure is important if flexible).

Food suggestion: A picnic type ‘everyone contributes something’ lunches on Friday’s dinner is open at the moment. The plan is to head to Canal Street and the surrounding Gay Village environs, so people may want to eat there. Saturday’s official con dinner would take place in a local restaurant. With the above in mind, please let us know if this broadly speaking sounds like a good plan, and if you have any specific dietary restrictions/allergies we should take into consideration.

Talks/Activities: Considering the potentially small attendance we're planning to keep this relatively informal and relaxed, but it would still be good to have some clearly defined activities and items for discussion. We have some ideas but we also need your input. Please comment with your ideas. Would you be willing to give a short talk (prompt discussion about) a fannish topic? Do you want to pimp a small fandom? Run a creating workshop?

Some suggestions:

Vid show - please pimp two of your favourite fanvids from the last two years.
'Shut Up And Create' to take place on both Saturday and Sunday mornings 8.00am - 10.00pm. To include fandom/tropes lucky dip.
New/small fandom pimps
Saturday to have a Halloween/Samhain theme. To include sharing of your favourite myths, legends, scary stories etc. Visual aids encouraged. People to send in clips/pictures
Gangbang (pimping gangsters!) presentation by dreamersdare . Discussion to follow
Finding inspiration in fandom

We have some ideas for other presentations/discussions but if anybody has a particular idea for one of these we would love to hear from you. If nothing else this will save you from having to listen to kat_lair , dreamersdare and myself all weekend :D

In addition please let us know what type of fandom creating you do. This will enable us to plan things that actually relate, and so we don't assume everyone coming does nothing more than write fanfic (although that can be more than enough on occasion!)

Meeting Rooms Booked

Thank you to everybody that responded to the previous post. I have now gone ahead and booked the meeting rooms at the Premier Inn, St Peter's Square, Manchester for the weekend Friday 25 October (PM) - Sunday 27 October (AM).

As we are just a few minutes walk away from the gay village, it has been suggested that we terrorise the gay village. I personally feel this is a most excellent idea and as I have a Canal Street VIP card we can abuse that, and use the discounts in bars/restaurants etc that I get with it.

Also, as the event is going to be held the final weekend before Halloween/Samhain (which is one of the reasons we picked that weekend), we feel it would be a cool idea to have a spooky theme. Any suggestions on that theme would be gratefully received. I personally will be dressing up, and I know others will.

ACTIVITIES

If anybody has any ideas about activities they would like to see as part of the weekend, please comment below. In addition, if you would like to run a session - it could be on anything - writing fanfic, getting into the character's head, pimping your new and exciting fandom, making fanart, fan vids etc. The possibilities are endless and if you would like to run a session, again, please comment below.

Now we have dates and location, we'll be keeping this comm more active.

Yes we're still alive - suggestion on hotel

Hi all

Waves. Yes, we're still alive but very very busy!

So because kat_lair is super busy at the moment, and because we do want to go ahead with this, I have had a look around various places within central Manchester where we could hold the fandom weekend. We would want it to start Friday lunchtime and finish Sunday lunchtime.

I have looked at LOTS of places, but the Premier Inn, just off St Peters Square, Manchester, seems to be the most appropriate and certainly the cheapest. In centre of town, lots of eateries nearby, not far from Piccadilly and right slapbang by St Peters Square tram stop. Also just around the corner from the gay village for those who've watched Queer as Folk :)

For those of us who were lucky enough to go to Connotations, this is nothing like that hotel, which was like a faded lady giving £10.00 blow jobs in an alleyway just for a pack of cigs! This is more utilitarian, however, I have used Premier Inns before for meetings and they are very good.

Please let me know in the comments below if (a) you are still able to come that weekend, and (b), if you are happy to go ahead with this hotel. The cost would obviously be split between those attending so the more the merrier.

Please let us know ASAP as we need to book this quickly to keep the price. Friday night has already increased by £40.00!

Manchester, October 2024!

The results are in, and with a narrow margin we'll be getting our fandom on in Manchester in October 2024.

This gives us a good amount of time to plan and book.

Next step is for us to research potential venues. Considerations:

Location somewhere within public transport reach. The city centre is likely costlier, but the excellent public transport system in Manchester means we can go a bit outside and still be very reachable.
Needed for Fri half-day, Sat full-day, Sun half-day or just three days Fri-Sun. Currently all October weekends are for consideration but my guess is that the half-term will fall onto the final week of October meaning the weekend 25-27/10/24 might be a strong contender?
Capacity about ~30 (this is a massive guestimation)
Two rooms, one for activities, another for social hang-outs would be ideal
Ventilation/air-con for Covid safety
Options for food and/or accommodation at the venue and/or nearby
AV & wi-fi
Accessibility
Comfort (we don't want somewhere with fold-out chairs...!)
Cost of course
Something else I haven't thought about but you'll tell me in the comments

We have some people on the ground in Manchester who are able to go view venues in person to gauge suitability, but everyone is extremely welcome to provide suggestions in the comments.

I would also be interested in learning whether you would like us to explore group booking options for accommodation or whether you'd prefer the 'everyone just sort themselves out' option?

How about food? Would something like a shared meal on Sat be of interest?

Fandom Weekend 2024 - Decision Time!

Hello all

The initial post on my journal about a Fandom Weekend 2024 garnered a critical mass of interest, hence this community.

Having discussed (with various people) pros and cons of various options re location including accessibility, public transport, accommodation options, cost, food etc the decision is to go with a city centre location rather than a large holiday let in a more isolated settings on this occasion. This absolutely does not stop us/anyone organising that type of event in the future.

The poll and comments in that post gives some broad direction re time and location, so time to see if we can narrow it down a bit more. The below poll will be open until Mon 24th.

What is the community about? A community for organising fandom in-person get-togethers and events in the UK.

Oooh, what kind of events? Whatever you want to organise! Current plans are for a multi-fandom weekend in summer 2024 but the community serves as a platform for anyone organising any type of fandom events of any lengths.

Who can join? Anyone interested in attending and/or organising fandom in-person events in the UK.
